Talk to a working airline pilot

I’m Austin Reed. Airline Pilot Path is a one-on-one conversation for people who want to start flying and become a pilot. You send a note. If it makes sense to talk, we set a video or phone call. I’m not enrolling you in a class.

I’ve been flying since 2009. I’m a flight instructor. I was Assistant/Chief Pilot at a major Part 141 school. Two regional airlines, currently CA on the Airbus 320 at a legacy carrier. The longer version is on About.

Why talk to a line pilot

The first person a lot of people hear from is paid to fill a class. The second is a forum where nobody has to stand behind the advice. Both can be useful, and both can be selling something — a seat, or a point of view.

A working pilot can tell you what training actually felt like, what instructing is for, and what changed when the job became the airlines. Early mornings. Reserve. The parts that never make the brochure. I can’t tell you you’re a natural. I haven’t flown with you, and I won’t be. I can tell you what the work is, and help you decide if you want it.

What a call is for

It depends on the note you send. These are the subjects that come up most:

  • Whether this career fits the life you actually have.
  • How people usually move from a first lesson toward an airline job, including Part 61 and Part 141.
  • Time and money, in ranges, before you treat a school quote as a plan.
  • Training around a job or a family — the career-change version of the same certificates.
  • What airline hiring feels like from the applicant side, without a promise that I can get you in the room.
  • The question you’ve been sitting on and didn’t want to ask a recruiter.

How it works is the short version of the format. The path itself is written out separately, if you want to read before you write.

What I won’t do

I won’t sell you a school, and I don’t take money from flight schools. I won’t pick one for you. I won’t promise you a job, a class date, or a checkride result. I won’t give you medical or legal advice. If your situation is outside what I’ve done, I’ll say so.

If after we talk you decide not to pursue this, that’s a successful conversation. Same if you decide to go, and you go in with your eyes open.

Who it’s for

People who haven’t started. People in the middle of a sales process with a school. People changing careers who need the path explained against a job and a family, not a blank calendar. If you already have a plan you trust and a school you trust, you may not need me. That’s a fine outcome.

How to book

Use the contact form. Tell me where you are — never flown, looking at schools, changing careers — and what you’re trying to figure out. I’ll write back, and we’ll schedule a video or phone call. Email works too: hello@airlinepilotpath.com.

I don’t list a price for a conversation on this site. The form is how we sort out whether a call makes sense. A conversation costs a lot less than signing up for training you haven’t decided you want.

Questions people ask

Is this flight training or a flight school?

No. Airline Pilot Path is a scheduled video or phone conversation. I don’t offer lessons, rentals, or a syllabus, and I don’t enroll you in a school.

Do I need to have flown already?

No. A lot of useful conversations happen before the first lesson, which is often the better time to talk — before you’ve wired money to a school.

Can you get me hired at an airline?

No. I can describe how the path works and what hiring has looked like from the applicant side. I can’t place you in a job or promise an interview.

How do I book a call?

Use the contact form. Tell me where you are and what you want to figure out. I’ll write back, and we’ll schedule a video or phone call. You can also email hello@airlinepilotpath.com.
